Salem Hosts Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Event

Salem and Beverly residents are invited to drop off items at Salem High Saturday for a discount fee.

SALEM, MA — Salem and Beverly residents will have a chance to clear out the basement, shed and garage in time for the end of summer this weekend when Salem hosts its next household hazardous waste recycling day at Salem High School.

Through a "Resilient Together" agreement, both Beverly and Salem residents are invited to drop off their items at a discount fee. Beverly will host the next event in the spring when Salem residents will be allowed to participate.

This weekend's event is from 8 a.m. to noon at Salem High. The fee per car is $20.

Proof of residency in one of the two cities is required and no commercial vehicles will be allowed.

Residents are invited to drop off: oil-based paints, stains and varnishes, wood preservatives, thinners, solvents, adhesives, and lighter fluids.

Glue, fiberglass resins, photo chemicals, chemistry sets, polishes, kitchen, bathroom and appliance cleaners, stain removers, and artists' supplies.

Fuel, motor oil, antifreeze, car fluids, waxes and polishes, driveway sealer, roofing tar, pool chemicals, car batteries, and passenger tires.

Yard poisons, fertilizers, weed control pesticides, mothballs, flea control products, and propane tanks.

Items NOT ACCEPTED include: latex paint, trash, yard waste, commercial/industrial waste, smoke detectors, biological waste, ammunition, fireworks, asbestos and fire extinguishers.

Medications can be dropped off at the police station.

Syringes can be brought to the fire station.

Those attending should bring items in their original containers and be careful to separate and not mix items.
