Salem Limiting Charter Street Cemetery Access In October

From The City of Salem: The City of Salem will limit the number of individuals permitted to be inside the Charter Street Cemetery to no more than 100 people at any one time on Saturdays and Sundays in October and on Halloween, October 31. Entry to the cemetery will only be permitted from the gate on Charter Street. The gate at the Witch Trials Memorial on Liberty Street will be for exiting the cemetery only. Entry to the cemetery from Liberty Street will not be permitted.

Police and event staff will monitor the number of individuals in the cemetery from 10:00 a.m. until sunset, when the gates are locked and the cemetery closed by law. Only up to 100 people at most will be allowed inside the cemetery on these dates.

Guided walking tours that visit the cemetery as part of their tours will not be subject to this cap on the number of people in the cemetery. Tour guides should check in with the City staff person at the Charter Street entrance upon arrival and before entering the cemetery. Guides should provide the staff with an accurate count of the number of your tour participants. Tour groups may only enter the cemetery using the Charter Street gate and must exit the cemetery via the gate at the Witch Trials Memorial.

In addition, visitors to the cemetery are reminded of the following regulations:

1. Entry after sunset is prohibited.
2. Grave rubbing is prohibited.
3. Sitting, climbing, or standing on headstones, fences, and tombs is prohibited.
4. Open flames of any kind are prohibited.
5. Please be respectful of the space: remain on paths only and do not place trash or food on tombs, headstones, or on the ground.
6. Theft of objects from the cemetery and vandalism will be prosecuted to the fullest extent allowed by law.
