SALEM, MA — Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll said she would be "interested" in running for Rep. Seth Moulton's seat in Congress if it became open. Driscoll has previously downplayed interest in running for the seat. On Monday, Moulton announced he was running for the 2020 Democratic Presidential nomination.

"If the seat were to become open, it’s fair to say it’s something I would take a hard look at," Driscoll told the Daily Item, which first reported this story. "Washington, D.C. could benefit from having more local perspectives represented...As mayor, I have direct accountability to the people I serve. I’d certainly be interested in how I can lend a positive direction at a higher level in Washington."

Moulton plans to run for reelection if his bid for President is unsuccessful. But some candidates are positioning to possibly challenge him for a reelection bid. On Tuesday, Jamie Zahlaway Belsito of Topsfield said she plans to run as a Democrat to challenge Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA) in the primary when he runs for reelection next year.

In December, Driscoll dismissed speculation that she would run for Moulton's seat, even if he did not seek reelection. "I don't think that's on her radar at this point," Dominick Pangallo, Driscoll's chief of staff, said at the time.
