SALEM, MA — Nearly a year after it broke loose and sank to the seabed during a storm, a 40-foot aluminum gangway is back on dry ground this week with help from the Salem police dive team and the Salem Harbormaster.

Police said the dive operation was conducted last week to retrieve the seaweed-enveloped city property. The walkway had been lodged in the seabed since it broke off and sank last October. Divers had to use lift bags to free the platform from the bottom of the sea so it could be brought to the Winter Island Boat Ramp for retrieval.

"After being submerged for the past 10 months," Salem police said, "the gangway will require a bit of cleaning before being put back into public use."
