Salem Police Logs: People Sleeping in Unusual Places, Complaints of Aggressive Panhandling

Excerpts from the Salem Police Logs.

SALEM, MA — The following are excerpts from the Salem Police Logs from July 23 and 24. The following information was derived from the Salem Police Department's logs. It does not indicate a conviction.

July 23

4:11 a.m.: Two police units responded to Winter Island Park for a report of a person walking around trying to open a car door. Police were not able to locate anyone.

6:24 a.m.: Police responded to Winter Island campground for a report of undesirables. Park staff relayed that a group was found sleeping by a new trail. Police spoke to the group, who wer not paying customers of the camp and not sleeping at a site. All three were issued no trespass orders for the park and sent on their way.

8:50 a.m.: After an investigation, owner Jose Ferreira-DaSilva will be summonsed into court for charges of the unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and speeding.

9:11 p.m.: A police unit responded to 44 Derby St. for a report of a man sleeping on the sidewalk. Upon arrival, police found a man who was sleeping on the ground. Police woke the man up and he stated he didn't need any help. He later attempted to stand up, but lost his balance. Police detected a strong odor of liquor and the man could not stand without losing balance. He was placed into protective custody without issue.

July 24

2:06 a.m.: Police spoke to a man who was found sleeping at the door steps of a Lafayette Street business. He was asked to move along, and no other issues were reported.

3:39 a.m.: Police spoke to a woman who was sleeping in the lobby of the Century Bank on Central Street. She was advised to move along.

1:54 p.m.: Police responded to Traders Way for a report of an aggressive panhandler. Police spoke with a man who was standing on the traffic island at the intersection of Traders Way and Highland Avenue. The man was advised to leave the area, but stated he would stay on the sidewalk in the future.

2:05 p.m.: Police responded to Warren St. for a report of a possible domestic. Police spoke to a man and a woman who denied having a domestic dispute. They were listening to music at a high volume and it may have caused a noise complaint. The music was lowered without further incident.
