Salem Police: Walmart Parking Lot Attack Was Racially-Motivated

A Lynn man who tried to run down four Hispanic people with his car is being held without bail after pleading not guilty Monday.

SALEM, MA — Robert J. McCarthy Jr., 56, pleaded not guilty Monday in Salem District Court to charges stemming from what police described as a racially-motivated attack in a Walmart parking lot. Police said McCarthy tried to run down four Hispanic people with his car while shouting ethnic slurs and threats on Friday night. McCarthy is being held without bail.

According to the Salem News, which first reported this story, McCarthy was charged with four counts of attempted murderand four counts of assault with intent to intimidate based on race or national origin. McCarthy also was charged with threatening to sexually assault and murder a teenage boy who was walking through the parking lot with his family.
