Salem Public Library Book Club Meets In February
The Salem Public Library book club is open to adults of all ages. New members are encouraged! The group will meet February 25.

Is your New Year’s Resolution to read more books? We’ve got you covered at the Salem Public Library! Join our Adult Book Club and start the year off right. February’s selection is Plainsong by Kent Haruf.
Plainsong was tremendously well-received when it was published in 1999, winning the Mountains & Plains Booksellers Award and the Maria Thomas Award in Fiction. The novel was also a finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and The New Yorker Book Award.
“Ambitious, but never seeming so, Kent Haruf reveals a whole community as he interweaves the stories of a pregnant high school girl, a lonely teacher, a pair of boys abandoned by their mother, and a couple of crusty bachelor farmers. From simple elements, Haruf achieves a novel of wisdom and grace–a narrative that builds in strength and feeling until, as in a choral chant, the voices in the book surround, transport, and lift the reader off the ground.”

“…From simple strands of language and cuttings of talk, from the look of the high Colorado plains east of Denver almost to the place where Nebraska and Kansas meet, Haruf has made a novel so foursquare, so delicate and lovely, that it has the power to exalt the reader.”
