A man holding an eight-month-old baby surrendered to police after an hours-long standoff early Sunday morning.

SALEM, MA -- A man surrendered to Salem Police early Sunday morning after an hours-long standoff on Charles Street. Police did not release the identity of the man, who was taken to Salem Hospital for evaluation and will likely be charged with domestic assault.

Police were called to Charles Street around 8:30 pm Saturday, where the man was holed up in a house with an eight-month-old baby and refusing to come out. Salem police Capt. Conrad Prosniewski told the Salem News, which first reported this story, the man surrendered around 12:30 am after several hours of negotiations. The infant, who did not appear injured, was turned over to its mother.

Salem Police had closed off the area for traffic for several hours Saturday night into Sunday morning.
