Salem's Northeast Animal Shelter Expects 100 More Ida Cat Rescues

SALEM, MA — One hundred more cats were set to travel from Louisiana to Massachusetts on Tuesday as part of the Northeast Animal Shelters of Salem's attempt to adopt pet rescues from the hurricane-ravaged region.

The partnership of the Northeast Animal Shelter and MSCPA-Angell is bringing the pets from the New Orleans area to help open up spots there for expected surrendered animals there in the wake of the Category 4 storm that made landfall on Sunday.

Late last week, Northeast and MSPCA-Angell were able to bring 36 rescue dogs and 39 cats to New England ahead of the storm. Now they are working to have about 100 more cats available for adoption as soon as next week.

"If you've been dreaming of adding a cat or a dog to your family there's no time like the present," MSCPA-Angell said.

MSPCA-Angell Memorial said in an update Wednesday morning the latest transport was delayed because of a logistics problem in Louisiana, but that they are still expecting the pets soon.

Northeast Animal Shelter will process as many adoptions as possible on Saturday as the animals arrive and quarantine. Appointments can be booked here.

Last week, 100 kittens and cats, two elderly chihuahua siblings and a 12-year-old dachshund named Pierre were among the pets available for adoption after the collaboration's first trip from Louisiana.

This past weekend, they brought an additional 36 dogs and 39 cats from Louisiana to New England to ease the burden on the Gulf Coast shelters amid the storm.

Northeast Animal Shelter said it is poised to transport even more animals from Louisiana in the coming days and weeks, if necessary.
