U.S. Coast Guard Barque Eagle to Land in Salem Friday

Free tours of the vessel will be offered this weekend. Here's what you need to know.

SALEM, MA — Salem's cruise ship terminal will welcome a truly unique visitor to its docks this weekend. The U.S. Coast Guard's Barque Eagle will be landing in the Salem Harbor on Friday.

The crew will be offering free tours of the coast guard vessel throughout the weekend. Here are the tour hours:

  • Friday: 1 to 7 p.m.
  • Saturday: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Sunday: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Eagle was built at the Blohm and Voss shipyard in Hamburg, Germany in 1936 and commissioned as a Horst Wessel. It is one of three sail-training ships operated by the pre-Word War II German Navy.

After the war, the ship was taken as war reparation by the U.S. and its home port is located in New London, Connecticut.

The ship spans a total length of 295 feet, 231 feet at waterline. It's anchors weigh 3,500 from the port and 4.4000 starboard. It runs a 1,00 horsepower diesel Caterpillar D399 engine.
