An excerpt from the Salem Police Department's Tuesday log.

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's Tuesday police log. Police assisted the fire department on numerous occasions and dealt with calls ranging from harrassment to shoplifting.
- Police and fire responded to Bridge Street at 7:49 a.m. Tuesday on a report of smoke in the building. Officials said there was "no fire found" but the smell of smoke was present and fire was still investigating.
- At 9:04 a.m. Tuesday, police responded to a call from Liberty Street about a "larceny-theft from [a] coin operated machine."
- Police responded to Salem Hospital at 9:19 a.m. after a report that a "backpack containing school supplies was stolen from behind the security desk by a recently discharged patient." Officers said a patient who was recently discharged was waiting in the lobby and hanging around the security area. Officers were concerned and asked the man to back away from the security area. The bag was in an area reserved for security staff, officials said. The bag, which contained books and school supplies, was last seen at 8:10 a.m. At 9 a.m., it was noticed the bag was missing. Police reviewed footage and were able to identify the residence of the discharged patient in Swampscott, who allegedly took the backpack. The backpack was recovered and returned to its owner. A relative of the suspect said the man was going through drug withdrawal "and took the bag by mistake." Police said they would seek a warrant for a charge of larceny from a building.
- At 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a disturbance at IHOP on Traders Way.
- Police received information from the Peabody Police Department about a graffiti investigation at 1:03 p.m. Tuesday. The entry was listed under "intelligence-gangs."
- At 1:31 p.m. Tuesday, police received a call about harassment on Derby Street. Police said that the caller said her "business cut the hair" of a male customer. After the haircut, the business was called by the man's wife, who accused employees of "flirting with her husband." Police advised the wife to stop calling the salon. They also spoke to the husband who said "he didn't know [what the issue was] and would stop going there and speak to his wife about it."
- Police arrested Scott Lojko, 34, of 286 Washington St. on a shoplifting charge Tuesday at 1:50 p.m. Authorities responded to Target after they were called about a "shoplifter with a knife." Police stopped Lojko when he was coming out of Target, handcuffed him "for the safety of all involved," and was frisked. Police said they found an X-box game controller and a Sony iPod dock in his possession. Police also said they found "a small box-cutter" that did not violate the City's knife ordinance, but was "very sharp and dangerous" on his person.
- At 5:10 p.m. Tuesday, police received a call about a past larceny from a motor vehicle on Circle Hill Road.
- At 9:51 Tuesday, police received a call about threatening comments made at a Lafayette Street apartment. When they arrived, police said the party reported that someone had written "'snitches get snitches'" on his front door. Police said the message was written in magic marker and was wiped off.
