As Temperature Soars, Learn Lake Massapoag History
The Sharon Historical Society explains some of the history of Lake Massapoag.
As the temperatures reach into the 90's and Sharon residents take advantage of Memorial Beach, what do you know about the Lake and the beach?
Did you know that the Lake was owned by Plymouth Rubber Company until 1936, when the town bought it? And where did the name Memorial Beach come from?
The Sharon Historical Society is a non-profit organization with no connection to the town. Our mission is to collect, preserve, interpret and share the history of Sharon Massachusetts. To this end we have a museum at 16 High St., we publish a quarterly newsletter and have quarterly educational programs as well as special events such as lectures, house tours and fund raising activities. You can support the Society, by joining for only $19 a year. Send dues to PO Box 175, Sharon, MA. You can also support us by helping with our two fall fundraisers: house tour on Sept. 18 and our silent auction Oct. 15 and 16.

The term Memorial Beach (for World War II veterans) was first used in the 1940s as the town took by eminent domain properties along what was the original placement of Beach Street. It was not until 1945 that the town started to take responsiblity for the waterfront.
