Donation Helps Sharon Police K9 Buck Don Bullet-Resistent Vest

SHARON, MA —Sharon Police K9 Buck was given a gift that is both fashionable and functional this holiday season, courtesy of Massachusetts Vest-A-Dog. Sharon police said a donation from the non-profit organization helped the department fit Buck with a bullet-resistent vest.

Sharon police said the vest serves as a tracking harness and also provides ballistic support in the area of Buck's vital organs.

Massachusetts Vest-A-Dog helps police departments get vests, medical supplies and other needs for their K9 units. Sharon police said the company that manufactures the vest — LOF Defense Solutions — made a special name tag for Buck as a way of personalizing the donation.

According to Massachusetts Vest-A-Dog, while law enforcement agencies provide bullet-resistant vests for their human officers, they are unable to fund vests for K-9 officers. As K9s are trained to give up their lives to protect their partners and all of us, we believe it is every bit as important to protect them. Vest-A-Dog grants are awarded twice a year in June and December.

A bulletproof K9 vest ranges from $1,200 to $2,500 each. All K9 vests will also protect against blunt force trauma if kicked, punched, or struck with an object, like a bat.
