The Sharon Public Library will host a viewing and discussion of the Bogart and Bacall classic, “The Big Sleep” from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday.
Wheaton College Professor Josh Stenger will lead a discussion about the movie, the book, Bogie and Bacall, and film noir.
Reading the Raymond Chandler book of the same name is encouraged but not required. Copies may still be available at the library or through the OCLN network. The differences between the book and the movie are fascinating and the reasons for those differences are equally interesting. In this film, L.A. private eye Philip Marlowe [Humphrey Bogart] takes on a blackmail case and follows a trail peopled with murderers, rogues, the spoiled rich and more. Marlowe is hired to keep an eye on General Sternwood's youngest daughter, Carmen, who has fallen into bad company and is likely to do some serious damage to herself and to her family. He soon finds himself falling love with her older sister, Vivien [Lauren Bacall]. The plot thickens as murder follows murder. The book is by Raymond Chandler, the screenplay by William Faukner (and others), direction by Howard Hawkes and the stars are Bogie and Bacall.
