Lightning Sparks Sharon House Fire

There were no injuries but a family pet passed away in the fire.

SHARON, MA - Local firefighters battled an early morning blaze caused by lighting.

At about 4:56 a.m., the Sharon Fire Department responded to a reported blaze at 21 Agawam Road. After arriving at the scene, firefighters discovered a smoke-filled basement. Due to the limited space and visibility, fire crews had difficulty finding the source of the fire. A thermal imager was used but was unable locate the blaze due to the high heat, according to Sharon Fire Chief James Wright.

A fireball was ignited after air was introduced to the area, with firefighters knocking it down with water and foam. The fire, however, was able to spread to the main level, with the blaze being upgraded to a two-alarm fire.

One person was home at the time of the fire and was able to escape without injury. A family pet inside the house did not survive.

A preliminary investigation from the State’s Fire Marshall indicates that the fire was related to a lighting storm that passed through the area during the early morning hours. The fire smoldered for some time before a smoke detector two closed doors away was activated.
