Merchant of Venice not full of mirth and laughter

Shakespeare in the park Merchant of Venice not a light comedy

A post in Patch description of Shakespeare in the Park production of The Merchant of Venice, describes it as a comedy "with mirth and laughter..."

It is true that Merchant of Venice is technically a comedy because if it's plot arc, ending in the wedding of two young lovers, but it is hardly full of mirth and laughter. It is a serious, gripping play with all sorts of subtexts about greed, money, sometimes outright anti-semitism. It should be seen, it should be appreciated for The writing and portrayal of attitudes from another time but it isn't "Midsummer Night's Dream" and that ought to be made clear.
