Moose Hill Competes in 35TH Annual Mass Audubon Bird-a-thon

Birding for a cause!

Mass Audubon, the state’s largest nature conservation nonprofit, will hold its 35th annual Bird-a-thon fundraiser on Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12. During this event, Wildlife Sanctuary and Conservation Program teams across the state will compete to spot or hear the most bird species in Massachusetts in 24 hours–and all for a good cause.

Bird-a-thon participants raised over $230,000 in 2017 for nature conservation, education, and advocacy and are aiming to surpass that total in 2018.

Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary will be competing for the fourteenth year in a row and is looking forward to both the competition and the opportunity to spend time outdoors with family and friends. Over these past 14 years, Moose Hill has slowly been gaining strength as a true competitor in the field. Last year, Moose Hill finally took home the top prize for the most species of birds identified with a grand total of 229 species. Brewster’s Cup proudly sits on our mantel in the Visitor Center and the team is gearing up to keep that cup right here for another year!

“Bird-a-thon is such a fun event;” said sanctuary director Karen Stein. “Not only do you have a friendly competition among colleagues, volunteers, and birders who want to be out for 24-hours in any kind of weather, but you are reminded of the variety and abundance of wildlife that surrounds us and the importance of our conservation and education efforts to protect nature and to connect people to these special places.”

While the love of birding and the spirit of competition is strong among the teams, this event has become the biggest fundraiser for Mass Audubon. Team Moose Hill will be raising money to support the education and conservation work happening right here, inspiring our community to understand, appreciate, and conserve the natural world through exploration of our sanctuary and engaging learning opportunities. Every dollar counts!
