It’s was talked about during the last school year but with the property for sale, the school committee is ready to explore the possibility of purchasing 175 Pond Street located next to the high school parking lot.
The owner had offered to sell in the past with low interest from the school committee but chair Emily Smith-Lee wants to take a second look with the property up for sale.
“I wanted to throw this out there to see if there is interesting in finding more information and having a discussion on whether it makes sense as as a school committee or in conjunction with the town to take some steps to lock up that piece of real estate that likely won’t come up again for awhile,” Smith-Lee said.

School committee member Laura Solomons was one of the committee members unsure of a potential purchase.
“It’s a very small piece of property. It’s money I don’t think this town has,” Solomons said.

Jonathan Hitter was more open to a purchase, supporting the idea of making the high school property larger if justifiable.
“I think anytime you can add land to a parcel you own it’s a good thing. Whether it’s parking or space for available space for something, you have to justify the means obviously. To attached it to this I think would be beneficial to look into,” Hitter said.
According to Smith-Lee, the house sitting on the property would be demolished and used based on the needs of the schools.
Marcy Kaplan was in support of looking into buying the property just to see if it is in the interest of the school district to do so.
“I think we’re not doing out job if we’re not thinking about the questions step by step and the first step is does this make sense?” Kaplan said, “Maybe we explore it, it’s a great idea and maybe it’s not feasible. I don’t think we can jump to the conclusion that it’s not feasible so we won’t look into it.”
According to Zillow, the property is worth $382,773.
The committee will look further into the issue at a meeting on a later date.
