Sharon Awarded Nearly $7,000 In Fire Safety Grants

SHARON, MA — The fire department was awarded almost $7,000 between two state grants for fire safety education for children and seniors.

The grants are part of the Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) and Senior S.A.F.E. programs. The Baker-Polito Administration awarded grants to 246 fire departments throughout the state.

Sharon's fire department received $4,354 under the S.A.F.E. grant, which will be used for fire safety education programs for children. The $2,600 Senior S.A.F.E. grant will be used to make sure Sharon's seniors are safe in the event of a fire.

"The program is a great example of state and local governments collaborating with teachers to provide fire safety education to young people," Gov. Charlie Baker said in a press release.

The average number of children dying in fires annually has dropped by 74 percent since the S.A.F.E. Program began, Baker added.
