Sharon Chinese Celebrated the Year of Rooster
Sharon Chinese celebrated lunar new year at Sharon High, raised fund for education program and presented the Community Service Award.
The Year of Rooster was celebrated by the Sharon Chinese community at the Sharon High auditorium on February 11th. Chinese language classes, dancing clubs, martial arts clubs, choruses and musicians put together a delightful show for the celebration program.
February 11 is the 15th day (first full moon) of the lunar New Year. It is also an important festival in the Chinese tradition called the Lantern Festival, which generally concludes the two-week long New Year celebration. Watching lantern and firework shows, eating Yuanxiao, and playing riddles are also among the traditional celebrations.
The Lunar New Year celebration tradition in Sharon can be traced back to 2006. More recently, the annual Sharon Chinese New Year Celebration (SCNY) program became a popular fund raising event for the Sharon Public School Foreign Language Education Program. Also presented annually is the Community Service Award. This year, Superintendent Dr. Timothy Farmer has been recognized for his continued support to the Chinese Language Program in the Sharon Public Schools (Pictures by Libin Zhang, Haibo Wang and Hongwei Huang).
