Sharon girls' soccer team falls to Mansfield

It has been an inconsistent season so far for the Sharon High girls' soccer team.

But the Eagles have hopefully turned the corner with their effort in the last two matches. Even though Sharon wasn't able to follow up Saturday's 1-0 win over Hingham with a victory on Monday night against Mansfield. At a wet and windy Alumni Field, the Eagles did show improvement during a 4-2 loss to the Hornets in a Hockomock League match in Mansfield

"It has been an up and down season," said Sharon coach Bill Wallace. "On Saturday, we were up again. The girls played hard tonight, but it is hard to play in these conditions."

Sharon took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Sarah Cotton scored a goal, less than five minutes into the match. But Mansfield responded with a pair of goals by Kelsey Alexander and Marissa DeSimone to take a 2-1 lead at the half.

The Hornets made it four unanswered scores with two goals to start the second half. Jen Esposito scored in the fourth minute to make it 3-1 with Kayla Comer notching a goal 15 minutes later to push the Hornet advantage to 4-1.

Sharon ended the Mansfield run when Haley Cremer scored a goal with 10:30 remaining in the match off an assist from Cotton.

With the loss, the Eagles dropped to 2-4-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the league.

"We have 11 games left and we need more efforts like we got tonight," said Wallace, whose team will travel to North Attleboro Wednesday and will host Foxboro Friday. "We need to get a couple of wins and hopefully we are back on track now. I'm pleased with the effort of the kids. They have been great. They are a great group of kids."
