Student Directed Plays Come to Sharon Middle School!
Great theatre with heart and talent!
By Giovanna Wiseman
This winter, Sharon High School students showcase their talents in two heartfelt short plays in a new setting, on Sharon Middle School's stage. First up is Way Too Sketchy, written and directed by partners in puns Juliana Goldman and Daniel Ward. The story follows a ragtag group of improv actors on the cusp of the premier of their new sketch comedy show, Sketch! The only thing standing in their way: pushy director Peyton and wanna-be starlet Kendra. In the many attempts to be rid of their influence, hilarity ensues. Complicating things is the tentative romance between oft-overlooked cast members Avery and Mason, as well as buddy-commie hijinks from best friends Dakota and Syd. The improvised nature of this production allows the lines between actor and director to blur, with many of the best lines coming not from the pen of the writers, but the mouths of the actors. Director Dan Ward says “Directing a show this year has been an amazing opportunity for me and co-director to see our work come to life. It is fascinating to see our peers acting out a story we created. It has also been wonderful to see the way that our peers have improved this story in ways we would have never thought of..”
Equally stunning is The Trouble With Parents, written by Ari Levitt and directed by Georgia Rose Fraser. This play perfectly combines elements of comedy, romance, and family drama to create a truly moving production. The plot follows the Feller family, who are struggling to come to terms with the fact that their only son, Devin, has brought an unwelcome addition into the picture: a girlfriend. Try as he might, there is nothing Devin can do get his parents to budge on the matter. Will Devin ever straighten his life out? Ask the Director, seasoned actress Georgia Rose Frasier, who comments: “The student directed plays are a great opportunity for students, like me, to try their hand in a "behind the table job" in theatre. I was able to help develop Devin’s voice and watch him grow, all without taking the stage.” To join in the fun, come by Sharon Middle School on January 12th and 13th at 7:00pm. Tickets will be sold at the door.
