The Wiz Comes To Sharon High School

By Maddy Rothstein

It’s almost time to ease on down the road and into Sharon High School’s auditorium for Sharon High School Theatre Company’s fall musical, The Wiz! This show puts a modern spin on the classic story, The Wizard of Oz. Funny and meaningful for people of all ages,
“this show brings new life to the classic story of Dorothy and her friends through energetic R&B music” says actor and music director Max Price. “The show has the power to connect a new generation of listeners to the powerful lessons of The Wizard of Oz.” In this show, four unlikely friends travel together in hopes that the powerful Wiz will grant their deepest wish, while discovering the truth about life, love and happiness.
Students at Sharon High have been vigorously working to perfect the piece. Marissa Skulsky, an actor, costumer, and co-president of the theatre company raves, “this show has been one of the most exciting productions I’ve ever been in. The costumes are so unique and different than the traditional outfits of Oz.” Outfits in this production are made of unconventional materials such as a straws, soda cans, and plastic bags. The cast of this show have been working in and out of rehearsals to try to master their dance moves, memorize their lines, and ace their soulful sound. Actor and choreographer Dan Ward elaborates, explaining that “I’ve really had to try many different approaches to my line delivery, vocals, and my choreography in order to create the best possible show. This makes The Wiz a really exciting and inspired project to watch because behind every creative decision there is hard work from so many people.”
There are so many elements that go into creating the world of Oz. The company spends a lot of their time working on the complex set, making it safe for the actors to dance around on. Annie Dou, the head of constriction and a member of the technical team indicated that “this show has one of the most complicated sets. It has a ton of set pieces to show all the different parts of Oz. It’s going to be really fun seeing people react to it.”
