4. On this day in 1901, President McKinley was shot twice while visiting Buffalo, NY, and later died from his injuries. The newly formed Secret Service, which still protects presidents today, were present and protecting President McKinley at the time, but thought nothing of Leon Czolgosz standing out from the crowd holding out a handkerchief, which was covering a gun, according to history.com.
