A Great Local Talent: Ryan Stowe

Athlete of the Week is a feature spotlighting one athlete in Shrewsbury.

The Shrewsbury boys’ basketball team is gearing up for another venture into the postseason and one of the big reasons why is Ryan Stowe.

The Shrewsbury senior guard has lifted his level of play on the court and has been a main ingredient in the team’s success this winter. Even as one of the squad’s leaders and captains, Stowe is quick to give the majority of credit to his teammates wearing the Colonials’ jersey.

“We’re a very senior-oriented team, many of which will be playing in college next year,” said Stowe, after finishing with a team-high 12 points in a 55-51 win over host Leominster last Monday night. “This is a very talented, athletic group that can play any style of game. We are capable of playing the perimeter game and shoot from the outside and we’re able to get the ball inside to our posts. Everyone brings different talents to the table.”

Following Monday’s triumph over the Blue Devils, the Colonials remained red-hot. Wins over Mid-Wach A rivals North Middlesex Regional and Wachusett Regional improved the team’s record to 11-3 on the season and 9-1 in the league. Shrewsbury currently sits atop the league and has qualified for the Central Mass. Division 1 Tournament for the fourth time in five years.

“Ryan Stowe has been part of an unbelievable turnaround in Shrewsbury basketball,” said Shrewsbury head coach Adrian Machado of Stowe. “He’s been a gift from heaven. He transferred in here and has been a starter ever since. He’s a team leader and a captain. We’re very glad to have him.”

Stowe, who’s a two-year captain, transferred to Shrewsbury from nearby St. John’s after his freshmen season. Since that time he’s been a key cog in the Colonials’ wheel.

“I like to shoot the three when I have it, but this year a lot of guys have been running out at me so I’ve been putting it on the floor and trying to take it to the hoop a little more,” said Stowe. “If I get doubled I have no problem kicking it to the open team mate. I have a lot of confidence in them.”

After he finishes up his career at Shrewsbury, Stowe is planning on attending Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts where he hopes to continue his basketball career. Stowe will be looking to major in business.
