SHREWSBURY, MA — Town officials are advising residents that the Cross-Country Trail at Shrewsbury High School has been closed due to tree damage from a recent fire.
A fire in the wooded area along Cypress Avenue left numerous trees in weakened condition, the town announced on Tuesday. The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation determined that the damaged trees could pose a safety risk to trail users.
Town officials shared a map of the location of the extinguished fire and damaged trees.
The trails, which wind through the wooded area surrounding the high school campus on Cypress Avenue, are frequently used by both student athletes and residents for recreation.
As a result, the trails have been closed to the public until a full hazard assessment can be completed to ensure the area is safe for public use.
Officials are asking residents to avoid the area while assessments and any necessary remediation work are underway.
