SHREWSBURY, MA — Local first responders teamed up on Sunday morning after a young black bear was seen wandering through busy parts of town.
A passerby stopped at the Shrewsbury Fire Department early on Sunday morning to report that he had seen a lone black bear crossing in front of Station No. 3 on Centech Boulevard and heading into the woods.
Just a few hours later, a black bear was also seen roaming 1000 Boston Tpke. Plaza.
Shrewsbury fire and police, along with the Massachusetts Environmental Police, teamed up to safely relocate the animal.
The bear was eventually tranquilized on Walnut Street between Route 9 and Route 20. He was loaded for transport with his body temperature kept cool with bags of ice.
Shrewsbury fire said the bear was transferred to a rural area, so it will not pose a risk to high-traffic areas.
Officials believe the bear is at the age when young bears typically separate from their mothers and begin roaming on their own.
