SHREWSBURY, MA — A longtime Shrewsbury educator who helped lead students into a new Sherwood Middle School is nearing the end of a three-decade career in the district.
Dr. Jane Lizotte, Shrewsbury Public Schools’ assistant superintendent for community partnerships and well-being, will retire effective June 30 after 30 years in the district, according to School Committee minutes. State Rep. Hannah Kane (R-Shrewsbury) praised Lizotte this week for her work with students, educators, staff, parents and the wider community.
Kane said Lizotte “helped shape and lead” Shrewsbury Public Schools for nearly three decades, calling her one of the most positive people and educators she knows.
The district’s staff directory lists Lizotte as assistant superintendent for community partnerships and well-being. Before moving into that role, Lizotte served as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal at the elementary and middle school levels, according to a recommendation from Superintendent Joe Sawyer that supported her appointment to the assistant superintendent post.
Rep. Kane pointed to Lizotte’s role during the 2009 and 2010 effort to build support for a new Sherwood Middle School. She said Lizotte welcomed residents into the old Sherwood building so they could see structural and educational challenges and understand why a new school, with state support, was the better fiscal choice for Shrewsbury.
The new Sherwood Middle School opened to fifth- and sixth-graders at 28 Sherwood Ave. The school now serves grades 5 and 6, according to the school district.
School Committee member Erin Boucher said in February that Lizotte’s service had a lasting impact on students and staff and noted her recent work to enhance career technical education, according to meeting minutes. Superintendent Joseph Sawyer also congratulated Lizotte and thanked her for her service to the district.
