SHREWSBURY, MA — A fundraiser for a Shrewsbury firefighter and his family is nearing its $100,000 goal as he recovers from a leg amputation.
Mike Penney, 36, underwent surgery that resulted in the amputation after a sudden and severe illness, according to the Professional Firefighters of Massachusetts Charitable Trust. The campaign had raised about $95,000 as of Wednesday afternoon to support Penney, his wife, Amy, and their three children during his rehabilitation and recovery.
Penney has been a member of the Shrewsbury Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 4613, for more than six and a half years, the foundation said.
The foundation described Penney as someone dedicated to serving the public and supporting his fellow firefighters and loved ones.
Amy Penney and the couple's children, ages 1, 5 and 7, face a lengthy adjustment as Penney continues his recovery, according to the campaign. Donations will help the family during his ongoing rehabilitation.
"Mike has always been one of the first people to help others in need. It's our turn to step up and help support the Penney Family as Mike recovers," Adam Towner, President of the Shrewsbury Firefighters Association, Local 4613, told Patch. "Mike is doing well, and he and his family have been blown away by the support they have already received and the community that has rallied around them"
