Congratulations Northborough
The underbelly to the arrival of Wegman's is the unfortunate struggle many small businesses have to endure.

Receiving the prestigious “Best of Boston” award is no easy feat, particularly since the magazine typically draws the line at I-495.
Interestingly, Boston Magazine cited one reason for including Northborough in their list. The reason is Wegmans.
I have written about “The Wegmans Effect” in an earlier blog, and was delighted to see that others saw the tremendously positive impact Wegman’s would have on our region. As is the case with most positive things in life, there is also a negative affect.

The underbelly to the arrival of Wegman’s is the unfortunate struggle many small businesses have to endure. The closing of O’Driscolls and Tilz are perhaps just a glimpse into a growing trend in our region, the quintessential showdown of David and Goliath.
The winner, of course, will depend on consumer behaviors but also just how hard David is willing to fight to defend himself and his business. Small businesses must unite and be highly creative in this environment.

Networking with other businesses, patrons and local community leaders will help to keep our local gems top-of-mind.
Just last week I needed to bring a dessert to a party, I started towards Wegman’s, but stopped along the way at CocoBeno on West Main St. in Northborough. What a delightful experience!
There was absolutely no compromise-the cupcake was perfect, the price was reasonable and I was glad to support a local business. I hope we all might chose to support our local people-but remain thankful for the impact Wegman’s will undoubtedly have on our town and region.
