Credit Unions Benefit from Bank Fees [POLL]

With larger banks instituting debit card fees, local credit unions say they are seeing new customers.

After hearing about new debit card fees from , the has seen an influx of new customers.

Boston.com is reporting that legislators are investigating whether or not Bank of America can charge debit card fees to customers.

"We offer absolutely free checking an no usage fees," said Shrewsbury Federal Credit Union Marketing Director Jean Coates. "We have seen newer customers come in since the news from Bank of America adding fees came down last week."

Coates said some customers may be hesitant to change over accounts because they think it's a difficult process.

"The process is actually quite simple because during the process you can keep the old account open while you wait for the direct deposit to transfer over," she said. "We offer online banking and we are also part of the SUM network of ATMs, which are available all over, with no fees."
