Legally Blonde Features Students, and Two Adorable Little Dogs

Shrewsbury High School puts on 'Legally Blonde,' opening on Thursday night.

For Bonnie Narcisi, directing "Legally Blonde" has turned out to be one of the most complicated productions she has ever directed.

Narcisi, Shrewsbury High School's director of music and theatre, said there are "many moving parts" to this production, which opens on Thursday, April 4, at the high school.

The play, which revolves around the vivacious Elle Woods, who appears to have it all, follows her life, which is turned upside down when her boyfriend breaks up with her to "start getting serious about his life." Woods wants him back, and gets into Harvard Law as well.

Narcisi said "Legally Blonde" was chosen for the students because there are several parts and places, which gives her a chance to feature a myriad of students. Also, she said, other factors such as the storyline, audience appeal, and fresh and appealing song and dance songs played a role in the choice.

"Many of our previous productions have revolved around a unit set," said Narcisi. "Conversely, this story continually flows through a series of set changes while the music just keeps going; therefore, the set changes need to be choreographed in much the same way as the song and dance numbers."

Because there are so many acting and singing parts, twice the usual amount of microphones have to be used. Not to mention, two adorable dogs are involved in the show.

"I can honestly say that this musical has been a challenge, with countless hours spent on preparation," said Narcisi. "However, it has been a labor of love. The students are really enjoying themselves and growing in many ways from this experience."
