Press release submitted by John Heald of Heald & Chiampa.
The garden and island located at intersection of Rte. 140 and Prospect Street split has officially be re-landscaped and beautified, compliments of Funeral Directors and CMD Lawn & Landscape.
“Sometimes making the community a better place to live is by simply making it a little more pretty. We take pride in being able to help. We’re business people and residents of Shrewsbury and we want to make the trip through town as pleasant as possible,” said Jim Heald, funeral director and resident of Heald & Chiampa Funeral Home, commonly known to townsfolk as the historic Sumner House located in Shrewsbury Center.

Working with local officials and members of The Shrewsbury Garden Club, the high-profile traffic island located steps away from the town common was designated as the ideal location for their sponsorship.
When Jim Heald contacted Alison Ricker at The Shrewsbury Garden Club inquiring if they might be able to sponsor an island.

“We couldn’t think of a better partner to help us with this island. This is truly a gift and it has helped ease the responsibility from our members. Watching what they have done with entire property and home of The Sumner House has been nothing short of remarkable. As a community we are so fortunate to have them taking a genuine interest in our town beyond their funeral home. Everything is so tastefully done at the funeral home when asked to if they could help with the island it didn’t require much thought," said Alison Ricker.
Heald boasts of a green thumb but after thoughtfully considering the best approach to improving the island’s appearance he enlisted the help of local landscaper Mike Dozois of CMD Lawn & Landscape.
Dozois too offered his time and labor in getting the beds prepped, fertilized and planted.
“There is strength in numbers and if the responsibility is shared is makes the work load a little lighter. We are delighted to be able to help maintain this island and have received many compliments for the work done,” Dozois said.
