For Senior Megan Waite there’s no time like the present.
As a four-year member of the Shrewsbury field hockey program and a 2011 captain of the Colonials, Waite knows what it takes to be successful in the Shrewsbury system.
Shrewsbury is off to a fast start in 2011, jumping out to a 3-0-3 record through the first six games. A key to the strong showing in the early stages of the season is the play of Waite.

“She’s been very strong for us so far this season. She’s a forward but she’s bounced around and played several different positions,” said Shrewsbury Head Coach Lauren Chenervert, now in her 13th year on the Colonials bench. “She wasn’t fully 100 percent today because she got hurt in our last game but when she’s healthy she’s certainly one of our leaders and a player to watch out for.”
The Colonials have had trouble putting the ball in the net thus far in the early season; however through the first six games the team has yet to taste defeat.

“We’re all really pushing ourselves and we work really well together but we’ve struggled so score goals,” Waite said. “It’s exciting. This group really strives to play better and we push each other. Today we were able to take advantage of that.”
Waite has been a member of the varsity field hockey program for the past two seasons, prior to that she suited up for the junior varsity squad.
When asked to talk about the being named a captain on the 2011 squad Waite didn’t hesitate with her response.
“It’s awesome. I feel so lucky that I’ve been a part of this program for four years and now I get a chance to lead the team both on and off the field,” Waite said. “The captains know that when we leave after this season the team will be in good hands when the younger girls move up and take our place.”
Last year the Colonials finished with an 11-4-5 record and reached the quarterfinals of the Division 1 Central Mass Tournament. Shrewsbury is also the defending Mid-Wach A league champions. It’s a feat this year’s squad would like to at the minimum match.
“We definitely want to repeat as champs,” Waite said. “We want to get back into the tournament and maybe even make it to states. We have the talent to do so and we’re going to try and go as far we can.”
Waite is also a member of the school’s track and field program in the spring.
Waite plans to attend college next fall however the Shrewsbury senior is keeping her options open. At this time she has yet to pick a school or a major.
“I don’t know right now. I know I am going to go somewhere but I just haven’t picked a school yet,” Waite said. "I’m kind of all over the place right now."
One thing is for certain despite Waite’s indecision at this time. If the senior captain is anything like she is on the playing field in the classroom than whatever school she decides upon will be one lucky university.
