Remy Talbot Looks to Spike the Competition

Shrewsbury girls' volleyball standout hopes to lead her team back to the postseason.

It appears Senior Remy Talbot made the right decision when she decided to come out for the Colonials’ girls’ volleyball team because it turned out to be a move she would never forget.

Talbot enters her senior year as one of the team’s captains and is also the starting libero as she and her teammates are geared up to make another postseason run in 2011.

“I thought we looked really good tonight. It was great that we finally got our reps in,” said Talbot after her squad opened the season in grand fashion Tuesday evening with a 3-0 road win over Nashoba Regional. “The team really came together and it was a fun way to open the season.”

According to Talbot, she came out for the program four years ago at the suggestion of her mom and some friends. She didn’t know what to expect but it’s safe to say it’s been a positive experience.

“Oh my god, it’s honestly the greatest sport I’ve ever played,” said Talbot, who is also a member of the Colonials' basketball program. “It’s so much fun and I love my teammates. Everyone is great.”

Shrewsbury Head Coach Rick Marchand didn’t shy away when asked how much Talbot means to the team, the program and her classmates.

“When Remy came to the program as a junior varsity player our goal was to break the school record for wins and we went 17-3. That year it was the first time in the history of Milford's program it had lost a j.v. match and it was Remy’s class that did that,” said Marchand after Tuesday’s triumph. “Something really special about Remy is that not only does she have incredible athletic ability on the court but she has an amazing demeanor in school as well.”

Talbot has been a member of the varsity squad the last two years and helped lead the Colonials to a 13-7 regular season in 2010. Shrewsbury earned the No. 8 seed in the Central/West Division 1 Tournament. The Colonials knocked off ninth-seeded Natick in the first round before falling to top-seeded Lincoln-Sudbury in the Quarterfinals.

When asked what some of her goals were for her senior year, Talbot would only talk about team goals.

“Obviously we want to make the district tournament and I feel we will do that pretty easily, we have that much talent,” said Talbot. “This is a hard-working team and I'm proud to be a part of it.”

Talbot has been playing the position of libero, a defensive specialist position used during indoor volleyball, for three years and she absolutely loves it.

“Oh, it’s such a fun spot. When the girls from the opposing team spike the ball at me it’s so much fun to dig it,” said Talbot. “When I dig the ball I feel amazing.”

When she’s not on the volleyball and basketball courts Talbot enjoys spending time with her friends. She lists math as her favorite subject.

She’s a leader on the court and she’s a leader in the classroom,” said Marchand. “She’s a real positive role model for the younger kids in the school.”

After graduation Talbot plans to continue her education at either Providence College or UMass. She is still undecided on a major.
