Shrewsbury Collects Nearly 200 Pounds Of Unused Drugs At Medication Take Back Event

SHREWSBURY, MA — Shrewsbury officials say a recent medication take-back effort collected nearly 200 pounds of unwanted drugs, marking a sizable turnout for a local public health disposal program.

The Shrewsbury Police Department collected 199 pounds of medication at the Apr. 25 event.

"With the help of our community, we collected an incredible 199 pounds of unused and expired medication, ensuring it was safely and properly disposed of," the Shrewsbury Police Department shared in a statement on social media. "Events like this play a vital role in keeping our homes safe, preventing misuse, and protecting our environment."

The collection day, held at the police station on Maple Avenue, gave residents a safe, anonymous way to dispose of unwanted prescription and over-the-counter drugs. The event ran from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and required no appointment or identification.

Officials encouraged residents to drop off items like pills and capsules, helping reduce the risk of misuse, accidental ingestion and improper disposal that can harm local water supplies. The effort is part of a nationwide initiative coordinated with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to address prescription drug abuse and promote safe disposal practices.

Community participation continues to play a key role in the program’s success. Similar past events have collected hundreds of pounds of medications, highlighting the ongoing need for safe disposal options.
