SHREWSBURY, MA — A Shrewsbury High School junior has been recognized through a state scholarship program for students who have shown academic promise while overcoming adversity.
Melanie Barbosa received the Christian A. Herter Memorial Scholarship and attended a scholarship ceremony at the State House with her family, State Rep. Hannah Kane (R-11th Worcester) announced on Monday.
The program identifies Massachusetts high school sophomores and juniors whose socioeconomic backgrounds or other circumstances may make it harder for them to reach their educational goals, according to the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education.

Students selected for the scholarship may receive up to 50 percent of their calculated financial need at the college of their choice within the continental United States, the department says.
The scholarship is named for Christian A. Herter, a former Massachusetts governor who served from 1953 to 1957 and later became U.S. secretary of state under President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
