Shrewsbury Patch’s Athlete of the Year
John Murray has passed the finish line as athlete of the year.

As a cross country runner at Shrewsbury High School, John Murray set several records, swiftly running past his competition to earn the Gatorade Massachusetts runner of the year. He was state indoor 2-mile champion and placed 6th at the Indoor Nationals in New York in March. In addition, he was the second high school runner in the Junior Nationals in Oregon to finish in the 5K race there in June.
According to Jim Smith, cross country coach at the high school, “John would run circles around anyone (presently) running.”
A 2011 graduate of SHS, Murray earned a scholarship to Georgetown University. Before he left for college, though, he took first place in the Shrewsbury Roads Scholars Race in May. And, while he was home for Thanksgiving, he won the Shrewsbury Turkey Trot.

“If the award is for the best athlete in 2011,” said Smith, “John Murray gets the nod with no question about it!”
