Skiers and Skaters Prevail

Shrewsbury athletes performed well around town.

Shrewsbury athletes are not afraid of the cold weather, as many performed great not only on the slopes, but on the ice as well.

On the slopes

At Ward Hill on Feb. 7, St. John’s racers placed in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh behind three racers from Wachusett.

With nearly identical scores of 52 total seconds and some change, the Pioneers had the most skiers in the top 10.

Kyle Dorion finished the best of the Pioneers, followed by Jonathan Green, Adam Dexter, and Nate Kowal. St. John’s also had another six racers finish in the top 20. Those racers were Nate Dexter, Cole Quitadamo, Matt Smith, Mike Campaniello, and John Buchholz.

The only Shrewsbury High racer to finish in the top 20 was Connor Nash, who improved his time by half a second on his second run.

The Shrewsbury High girls had much more success in the standings.

Brianna Brosnan and Elizabeth Goss took fifth and sixth place, respectively.

Evynne Gartner and Laurel Banach also finished in the top 20.

The girls took home second place to Algonquin (457 points to 438).

Unfortunately, the Shrewsbury boys finished with the second lowest score of 368, a disappointing amount for a team that showed promise, scoring 410 in the previous race. St. John’s finished the day with 469 points to take home the win, and stay undefeated on the season.

On the ice

When the Shrewsbury girls hockey team faced Auburn a couple weeks ago, they came out victorious 8 - 3. Apparently the Colonials were taking it easy on the Rockets then.

In the rematch on Monday night, Shrewsbury smashed Auburn 11 - 0.

Sam DiReda started the score-a-thon with 2 of the first 3 goals scored. Julia Mastrototaro scored the fourth goal early in the second period.

Mastrototaro nearly scored again seconds after the following face-off, but a save setup the fifth goal scored by Sarah DiReda. Mastrototaro got her second goal seconds later anyway.

As time was winding down in the second period, a slap shot was deflected off the stick of Rachel Diebold for the seventh Shrewsbury score.

The third period was a lot like the first two.

Four more goals were scored, including the first of the year for forward Katherine Pitney and a hat trick goal for Julia Mastrototaro.

“A lot was expected of Julia coming into this season” said Assistant Coach Nick Panarelli, “So far, she is really fulfilling those expectations and I’m proud of her.”
