St. John's Baseball Drops a Heartbreaker

Pioneers fall in extra innings to Minnechaug Regional.

With a district title already in its back pocket, the baseball team was looking for more Wednesday night at Tivnan Field at Lake Park.

The Central Mass. Division 1 champion Pioneers battled Western Mass. Division 1 king Minnechaug Regional in the State Semifinals and despite a solid effort, dropped a 6-5 decision in 11 innings.

With the win, the Falcons (15-10) advance to the Massachusetts Division 1 Finals where they will take on North champion Lincoln-Sudbury, a 16-2 winner over South champion Franklin in Wednesday’s other semifinal matchup. The Pioneers wrap up the season with a 19-8 record.

St. John’s entered Wednesday night’s game on the heels of its ninth Central Mass title with a 5-3 win over Westborough on Monday night, however, the bid to capture the program’s first state championship since 2002 came up a game short.

Eight St. John’s players put on the Pioneers uniform for the last time Wednesday night. Seniors Steve Petry, AJ Zarozny, Keith Kelly, Matt Solar, Mike Abraham, Drew Lorusso, Curt Pomeroy, and Dan Light saw their high school careers come to a close with a tough defeat.
