Two Former St. John's Students Drafted to the Big Leagues

Garret Smith was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays and John Andreoli was drafted by the Chicago Cubs.

Garret Smith, a 2007 graduate of , has been drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays with the No. 630 overall pick in the 20th round of the 2011 MLB Draft on Tuesday afternoon.

“That’s definitely a dream of mine, playing after college baseball,” Smith said . “That’s something I’ve wanted to do since I started T-Ball at 5 years old.”

Smith, a catcher, pitcher and shortstop  who graduated from Boston College this year, played three seasons with the Eagles' baseball team. This season, Smith had a .267 batting average with 17 RBI and a team-high 17 doubles for BC.

In his college career, Smith hit .268 with 90 RBI and 43 extra base hits in 181 games. According to Boston College, Smith started all but three games.

Smith was 0-2 with six saves, a 2.87 ERA, 14 strikeouts and nine walks in 17 games this season for the Eagles. Smith ranks eighth in the ACC in saves.

While Smith was a solid catcher and pitcher, the Rays drafted him as a shortstop. Smith played at shortstop in 83 games between his freshman and sophomore seasons.

In addition to Smith, former St. John's student John Andreoli was also drafted by the Chicago Cubs. He was drafted in the 519th pick and is currently playing for UCONN. He's plays outfield and first base. While at St. John's, Andreoli was a two-time Central Mass Division I All-Star member.
