Winter Reading Challenge Still Open
Opportunity to join in the fun of the new winter reading program is still available.
Though signups for the Shrewsbury Public Library Winter Reading Challenge began last fall, it isn’t too late for interested independent readers in grades kindergarten through four to participate in the online reading program.
“The Winter Reading Challenge is an online winter reading program similar to the one we do in the summer,” said Head of Children’s Services Linda Dashnaw. “The children read on their own at home and log in minutes...”
Although the current program has attracted only a fraction of the hundreds of summer participants, Dashnaw remains optimistic.

"This is the first time we have tried a winter reading club. We would like to keep the ‘reading spirit’ going during the winter,” she said. “It is more difficult with school obligations but perhaps next year—it will grow. That is our hope.”
In addition to opportunities to receive free, donated books and squares to a mystery puzzle, program readers earn raffle tickets based on the number of minutes of reading they log.

Preparations are in the works for a springtime 'end of program' hoopla.
“We are still working on the plans for the celebration in April,” Dashnaw said. “We think they will include a sundae party, prizes to win with raffle tickets, and reading certificates.”
