Ax-Throwing Bar Opening In Somerville

SOMERVILLE, MA – Is your night out suffering from a lack of sharp objects? Urban Axes, a chain of ax-throwing facilities (and bars), will soon have you chucking axes with your beer in Somerville. The Philadelphia-based company is opening a location Union Square this summer, according to BizBash's "10 Most Anticipated Boston Venues for Meetings and Events" 2018 preview.

A spokesperson for the chain on Thursday confirmed the news to Eater Boston but did not provide an exact address. Urban Axes had been looking at potential locations in greater Boston as far back as last June, the Boston Globe reported.

The Somerville facility will be Urban Axes' fourth location; according to the company's website, it also has locations in Philadelphia, Baltimore and Austin. Urban Axes is open for walk-ins as well as group events, which must be booked in advance.

All events start with safety instructions on wielding the 1.5-pound axes and one-on-one throwing practice with a trained coach. Then participants may take part in a round robin tournament, which is scored by the facility's coaches and capped by a knockout round to crown the winner.

The space will have a maximum capacity of 80-100 and come with a full bar, BizBash reported.
