The Community gathered to raise $15,000 for Food For Free

3rd Annual Empty Bowls Event a Success

SOMERVILLE, Mass. – On Saturday, April 16, more than 500 members of the community packed Mudflat Pottery School in Somerville during its third annual Empty Bowls event, a benefit for local food rescue organization Food For Free.

The event raised $15,000 for the nonprofit which rescues fresh food that would otherwise go to waste and distributes it to shelters, food pantries and emergency food programs. The event raises funds and awareness about the impact of hunger in the Greater Boston area. As one of the nation’s first and oldest food rescue programs, Food For Free, feeds more than 25,000 families annually. In 2015, the nonprofit rescued more than 1.7 million pounds of fresh, healthy food, which translated into over 1.3 million meals.

Upon arrival, guests chose a handmade ceramic bowl, made by Mudflat Pottery School artisans, and filled it with helpings of delicious soups provided by local businesses. The handmade bowl is each guest’s keepsake, to serve as a reminder of all the empty bowls in their community. For information about Food For Free and it’s programs, visit foodforfree.org.
