C.R.I.T. Opening Reception, July 9, 6-9 p.m. @ Washington Street Gallery, Somerville

SOMERVILLE, MA – The Washington Street gallery presents a group photography show by the collective C.R.I.T. (Camera Records In Time). “Beyond Here, There, and Now” presents a recent collection of dark, quiet photographs that hint at things just below the surface.

Chris Maliga’s 8x10 black & white view camera photographs explore themes of isolation, body image, and emotional turmoil via the natural landscape and nude self-portraiture. Laura Miner’s series Missing, inspired by crime scene and missing persons photographs, shows seemingly awful close-up scenes from an ambiguous point of view. Kitty Ethridge, through Havana’s cityscapes and people, is attempting to capture its beauty and lyrical nature, despite political forces that foster decay. Hannah Engelson presents work from her ongoing Sleeper Series; her two photos depict people sleeping in non-bedroom situations. Michael Powers’ photos present the isolation and detachment of home interiors and exteriors. Traverse Day Robinette explores the lack of connection between people and their environment in his black and white film photography.

About C.R.I.T.
C.R.I.T. (Camera Records In Time) is a collective of Boston area-based photographers that meets regularly to critique each others’ work as well as discuss other photographic and artistic topics. The members are not just still photographers but also filmmakers, animation artists, graphic designers, and collage makers. In their photography, C.R.I.T. works with both film and DSLR, medium and large format.

Washington Street is a gallery and studio space for more than twenty visual artists, and presents exhibitions, concerts, film series, and other art initiatives. Washington Street participates in Somerville Open Studios each May and an annual open studios in December.
