Coffee-Making Basics

Description:

Interested in coffee? Whether you're looking to learn the basics or get detailed, hands on instruction on the brewing method of your choice, this series has what you're looking for. Learn everything from coffee basics, to pour-over brewing, to iced coffee methods, professional coffee tasting (cupping), and espresso basics. This course is broken up into several sessions that can be attended individually or sequentially, and are scheduled as follows:

Session 1: Coffee Basics

Interested in the craft of specialty coffee? Take this opportunity to have all your questions answered. Learn about how proper extraction leads to balanced, delicious brews for beginners and professionals alike. We'll cover everything from water chemistry to roasting science. Students will get the chance to taste a variety of coffees brewed with an assortment of methods.

Session 2: V-60 Pour Overs

Been seeing those new pour-over bars in coffee shops all over the country? Learn to pour like a pro in this intensive session. Students will learn about proper pouring technique, different filter mediums, creative coffee problem solving and more!

Session 3: Professional Coffee Cupping

Interested in the professional craft of tasting coffees? Learn the proper methods and procedures of a professional coffee cupping. Students can expect to learn everything from what to look for in quality coffee, to identifying defects. A fun informative class for coffee beginners and professionals alike!

Session 4: Espresso Basics

Do you dabble in home espresso? In this class, students will learn about the basics of espresso extraction on a home espresso machine. This is your chance to understand the importance of everything from grind to brewing temperature. Learn about common mistakes, and troubleshooting repairs.

Session 5: Iced Coffees

Do you love iced coffee? In this class, learn new techniques to brew an old New England favorite. Get to taste the real differences between methods such as cold brewed, hot over-ice, toddy, kyoto drip, Japanese iced coffee, and barrel aged. Caffeine weary need not apply; don't expect to get much sleep after this one!

Session 6: Home Brewing

If you love brewing coffee at home, and just want to learn how to improve it or simply learn more about it, this class is for you. This class is all about how to make brewing coffee at home simple and delicious.Students will sample and learn about different methods such as french press, automatic drip, clever coffee drippers, melita, and more.

Class Goals:

Students who complete the class should have a much broader understanding of coffee from every standpoint, be that scientific, world economics, taste, or philosophical. All students will have the chance to win award winning coffee, made by a competition winning instructor. Students who partake in a hands-on class will be brewing from a selection of micro-roasted specialty grade coffees.

Prerequisites:

None.

Materials:

Varies by class. Pour over class will require the purchase of a V-60 and kettle, which can be purchased individually by students or through the instructor.
