Second Annual Mayor's Fitness Challenge Kickoff

The Mayor's Fitness Challenge will occur in April and May. This kickoff, to be held in the gym at Somerville High School, will include a farmer's market, fitness demonstrations, a "plant your own vegetables" station, face painting, recreational opportunities for kids, and more.

To participate in the challenge, teams of up to 10 people will compete to lose the most weight and imrpove the most Body Mass Index (BMI). You can also sign a "Lifestyle Pledge" individually to participate in a healthier lifestyle during (and after) the challenge.

“Last year, more than 300 community members of all ages participated in the Fitness Challenge, and provided very positive feedback of the overall program, so we are really looking forward to bringing this program back with new and improved programming, incentives, and educational materials designed to help any and all residents make healthier lifestyle choices,” Mayor Curtatone said.  “Through Shape Up Somerville and these related programs, our goal is not to ‘put an entire community on a diet.’  Our goal is to help residents learn how to make smart, healthy food choices on a budget, and to educate our community about the importance of physical activity.  The Fitness Challenge is a fun, community-building program that gets to the heart of those issues.”
