Foods That Help Fight Spring Allergies

Almost one in every five people suffer from seasonal allergies

Almost one in every five people suffer from seasonal allergies – that’s 50 million Americans – dealing with itchy eyes and congestion for months on end. Unfortunately, there is no magic cure for allergies, but fortunately there are foods that have been proven to help naturally combat even the worst symptoms.

  1. Broccoli: This green veggie is high in vitamin C which is proven to be allergy reducing – 500mg a day is all you need to help ease symptoms. It is also a member of the crucifer family, which helps to clear blocked sinus cavities.
  2. Citrus: To get a larger dose of vitamin C turn to oranges, grapefruits, limes and lemons.
  3. Kale: Like broccoli, kale is another member of the crucifer family to help clear sinuses. It’s also rich in carotenoids, which are pigments that help fight allergies.
  4. Fatty fish: Eating omega-3s, which are high in fatty fish like salmon, sardines, mackerel and tuna, have been known to ease allergy symptoms.
  5. Garlic: Studies show that garlic extract can help decrease an allergic reaction and prevent allergies altogether.
  6. Turmeric: A spice commonly found in curry and other Indian dishes, turmeric is known to have strong anti-inflammatories.
  7. Onion: Onions contain powerful antioxidants – most notably quercetin which helps to prevent inflammation. Quercetin also aids in your body’s absorption of vitamin C.
  8. Yogurt: Probiotics found in yogurt or other products, like kefir, help keep the gut healthy. Studies show that probiotics help prevent the body from overreacting to allergens.
