Friday: Somerville POW/MIA Flag Raising Ceremony

SOMERVILLE, MA – Somerville will hold a POW/MIA flag raising ceremony tomorrow morning in honor of the 37th annual National POW/MIA Recognition Day.

The United States first began observing the day in 1979 to honor returned prisoners of war those members of the military, along with citizens, who are still missing from past wars. It also recognizes current ongoing search efforts for the missing.

"It is crucial that we continue to honor the sacrifices that all of our members of the military make," Mayor Joseph Curtatone said in a release. "We must never forget those who suffered unimaginable events as prisoners of war or those who still haven’t returned home. It is our responsibility to remember them always and show our support for their still-grieving families."

The brief ceremony is open to the public and begins at 10 a.m. at Somerville City Hall.
