Fundraiser for Somerville Native Fighting Lou Gehrig's Disease

John Welch grew up in Somerville and has been an educator in the school system for years.

SOMERVILLE, MA – A fundraiser has been set up for Somerville native John Welch, who was recently diagnosed with ALS, or as it's commonly known, Lou Gehrig's Disease.

The GoFundMe campaign for Welch was established Jan. 20 and has raised a little over half its goal in just 17 days. Welch grew up in Somerville and has been an educator in the school system for years. A true Somervillian, he met his wife at the Blarney Stone pub and settled down with his family in neighboring Medford.

Welch has also worked for the Red Sox and owns several championship rings from his time with the team.

"John is a very humble, caring, and generous person, always helping others and never asking for anything in return," Dean Abruzzio, who started the campaign, writes. "He’s a devoted family man and great friend to many people and has always been there whenever needed."

Funds raised by the campaign will go toward supporting the Welch family, including assistance with future medical expenses. The goal is $50,000 – please share and help spread the word!
